Thanking her lucky stars for her deep moisturizing routine, Berelai clasped the roughened hands of the Candidatemaster with her own soft and supple ones. Her mother had taught her to always dress her best and take care of her skin and hair, for you never knew who you would run into outside your bed. She would have been mortified had her hands been cracked and dry. Rather they smelled clean and fresh from the unscented hand creme she massaged into her hands and feet every morning and night.
Feeling her confidence rise, Berelai stepped lightly behind H'skal as he started to lead them presumably into the jungle. She walked as though wearing heels, not trusting the terrain to immediately plant all of her weight down. Rather she took slow steps, careful to lift her feet completely free of the ground before setting them neatly in front of the other. The woman had a curious way of walking on a straight line that caused her hips to sway with the motion. But since everyone behind her was blindfolded, her movements were wasted.
She focused her attention on listening, waiting to hear the next command from the Candidatemaster as well as the sounds from behind her. It seemed like her fellow Candidates were all still on their feet since it was a quiet bunch that wound their way through the trees. Steps! Berelai knew they weren't in the Weyr, so these aforementioned steps must be from a natural feature. This indoor girl never spent any time exploring or hiking in the wilderness. Instead she preferred to wander the halls of a perfectly level and clean Hold or Weyr. Her smooth stride wavered for a moment as she gathered her slowly ebbing confidence and reached out with her left foot only to find air.
Instinct said to panic, but Berelai coughed to squish that treacherous thought as she timidly felt for the step, while saying to Jackine loud enough to be heard over the noise of feet, "Jackine, It's a big first step, go slow." The Candidatemaster hadn't forbidden them to talk and she didn't want Jackine to stumble and take the line down with her. "It's also narrow and uneven. I'm having to step sideways." She added, suiting action to words. She felt safer having her whole foot on solid ground rather than her toes sticking out past the natural step. Her voice sounded steadier than she felt, but Berelai pressed on intrepidly.
Much to her embarrassment she heaved an audible sigh of relief when she reached the bottom of the makeshift staircase upright and with the line intact. She slowed her pace to let the others catch up, tugging on the Candidatemaster's hands. Just because he could see where he was going didn't mean he had to walk so quickly! A sharp comment sprang to her lips and she fought it down, she'd seen how the Bronzerider had handled the Candidates earlier and she did not want to get on his bad side! Berelai was curious as to where they were going, though. She just hoped they didn't have to stalk through any mud or sand!
