It was one of the rare rest periods that the candidates got. Most of the candidates were out enjoying an unusually cool day, a few were napping, but Alea was sitting on her bed, thinking. As usual when she was thinking this deeply, the emerald eyed girl was playing with a long lock of her inky black hair. Her canine, Defender, was napping next to her while the new addition to her “family” Invader lay around Alea’s shoulders her faceted eyes glimmering as if listening to her Person’s thoughts.
Suddenly, Alea rose from her bed. Defender whined at the disturbance, but leapt off the bed and followed Alea into the Common Room. The girl went a desk where a pile of hides and cromcoal sticks waited. In the elegant hand her mother had taught her, Alea wrote a note for each candidate. Next, she went to everyone’s bed and carefully placed a note where the candidate and no one else would find it.
Meet in the Common Room, tonight at midwatch.
If they appeared as summoned by the note, they would find Alea sitting crosslegged in the middle of a table. On either side of her were flasks of juice and empty mugs as well as plates of bubblies she had ordered from the kitchens.
When it seemed everyone had appeared, Alea started:
“I do not know what experiences you have had, but I arrived at Telgar Weyr just after the Clutching. They kept us candidates busy learning about the weyrs, halls and crafts, the colors of dragons, ranking in weyrs, as if we never attended harper classes as children,” she grumbled, “we never saw the Hatching Grounds or the eggs.”
“And we have been here how many sevendays…anyone been to the Hatching Grounds? Seen the eggs? I am afraid that we will only be taken there the moment the eggs start Hatching. I do not know about you, but I do not want that to be my first time near the Hatching Grounds.”
Alea pulled a hide from her pocket, “Now I made a friend with one of the drudges who worked on building this weyr, she told me that there is a secret passageway through the weyr to the Hatching Grounds and I plan to go there tomorrow night. You are all welcome to go with me.”
She held up her hand, “This trip will be to see the Hatching Grounds and eggs only. As far as I am concerned, we must ask the WeyrQueen’s permission to touch the eggs, so if that is what you are interested in…you will have to find your own way. Now, does anyone wish to go along?”
