Name: V’sos
Age: 38 Turns
Rank: Bluerider
Physical Description: Calm blue/gray eyes gaze out of a scholarly face, tanned from the warm sun of Ista. A small nose dusted with the memories of freckles (slightly crooked from an old fracture), well-shaped eyebrows, and thin lips usually found pressed together in thought. There is a sadness that tugs at the corner of his eyes but is banished by his slow and willing smile. Cropped coppery-blonde hair and usually sports a dirty blonde 5 o’clock shadow, shaves daily. The Bluerider has long, thin and nimble fingers perfect for his hobbies (healer and scholar). Muscles built from the long life as a dragonrider fail to hide his smaller frame, when running you can still detect the whispers of a gawky and awkward childhood. A nasty scar from an incident involving coral at the beach twines around the left side of his ribcage, a constant reminder of the nightmare from over a decade ago. Still puckered in the middle from an infection that set in when a chunk of coral remained and had to be removed by his own hands days afterwards. He refrains from removing his shirt in the presence of others and prefers to bath alone during the quiet morning hours. A simple man, his wardrobe consists of neutral colored trousers and button-down shirts as well as his traditional riding gear.
Personality: A calm and oftentimes taciturn man, V’sos is not easily excited. 25 years as a rider, he’s no stranger to joy and sadness. He takes great pleasure in watching a Hatching, the hope and future for the young weyrlings reminds him that life goes on and there is always something to be happy about. Tragedy has struck time and time again to V’sos, losing a mate to disease, watching helplessly as his own son drowned in the sea, as well as the pain from the suffering and sickness wrought on his patients when he acted as Weyrhealer when the proper Weyrhealer was too stricken to help during a breakout of plague at Ista. Caught off-guard or alone, this Bluerider tends towards melancholy. However, in a crowd, he appears jovial and quick-witted. He sees no reason to share his sorrows with others and does everything in his power to keep those around him happy and full of mirth. As a child, growing up in the sands of Ista, he read everything he could get his hands on and has continued this scholarly streak by studying Pern’s history and every evolving culture. He learned herbs and healing at the side of his mother, a mid-wife who traveled along the coast near Ista from their home. His gentle hands and calming presence gives him an excellent bedside manner. Anger has yet to factor into his life as he turns the other cheek and seeks to understand both sides of an argument. Reason over emotions. Overall, V’sos is a quiet soul who takes nothing forgranted. He lives each day to the fullest and his optimism is often commented upon wryly by his Kimkinth.
Age at Impression: 13
History: A curious and gangly youth, V’sos (Vasos back then) knew that he was not destined to be a burly and ravishingly handsome man. Rather he felt his strengths were in his mind. A quick learner with a voracious appetite for knowledge, V’sos pestered his father, a fisherman for Ista, to get him as many hides or oral anecdotes from various ports. A family man, his father, Verasos, did not disappoint. After every fishing venture, he brought home stories to his wide-eyed son. Unfortunately, V’sos was an only child by the age of 7, his two younger sisters died from a beach fever when they were 4, and his mother miscarried what was to be his brother. His mother and father understood that death was a part of life and taught V’sos not to dwell on the sadness of the past but rather find the good in people while looking towards the future.
His mother acted as a midwife for a few small holdings along the coast and would take V’sos with her. By Tiasan’s side, he learned the cruder forms of healing. Braced with this happy and loving childhood, V’sos was Searched while visiting his father’s ship and Impressed Kimkinth the second time he stood on the Sands at Ista.
Afforded the freedom of a dragonrider, V’sos continued to expand his knowledge, borrowing hides and talking with everyone who would stop at Gathers across the continent. 7 Turns passed, weyrmates had come and gone before V’sos fell head over heels in love. Her name was Ichidou and she was Headwoman at Ista. She understood the needs of a dragon and rider and was not jealous when Kimkinth’s passion did not always match his rider’s. That being said, she and V’sos were together as frequently as their positions allowed. Romantic walks on the beach, watching the sun dip low in the ocean, candle-lit picnics and falling asleep curled up against Kimkinth.
For 15 Turns, life was idyllic. Ichidou bore a healthy son, Vadou, who grew up under the watchful eye of his father. Alas, the perfect life would not last. Plague struck Ista and Ichidou was one of the first struck down. V’sos did everything he could to save her, but it was not enough. One by one, drudges, holders and even riders fell victim to the plague. When the Weyrhealer became incapacitated, V’sos stepped in and held the chaos together as best he could. He did his best and once the plague had run its course, he was able to step down as Weyrhealer and resume his somewhat normal life.
The void left by Ichidou was vast, but he filled that hole with Kimkinth and Vadou, who was now almost 16 and shaping up to be an excellent healer. V’sos was now 36. After a long week of training on Kiminth, V’sos and Vadou took a couple of days off to enjoy the sun and surf, away from the distractions and noise of the Weyr. More athletic than his father, Vadou reveled in swimming and was a reckless youth. While his father looked on from the shore, Vadou swam out as the surf grew rough. Kimkinth snored soundly in his sand bed. Suddenly, Vadou was swept up in an undertow and was drug out to sea. V’sos dove in after, Kimkinth at his side, but by the time he reached Vadou, it was too late. A piece of reef near the coast had trapped Vadou and a wave knocked him unconscious. V’sos struggled and scraped up against the jagged coral as he pulled his son’s body free and clung to Kiminth as he was towed to shore.
After spending 2 more Turns at Ista, the hidden shadows of his past started whispering too loudly and V’sos requested a transfer to Xian to start anew.
Pets/Flits: light blue fire lizard named Omero, adept at fetching and carrying.
Weyrmate: None at present.
Dragon's Name: Kimkinth
Age: 25
Color: He is a deep oceanic blue that doesn't waver dramatically. It's a bit lighter around his snout, but other than that he's a solid blue, easily picked out when placed among other Blues because his hue is so robust and uniform.
Where Impressed: Ista Weyr
Physical Description: Of an average size for a Blue, Kimkinth is a study in proportions. His head is the proper size for his body, neck the right length, wings are appropriate, body neither too muscular nor bony, and his tail is just right. He is a traditional dragon, nothing more and nothing less.
Personalty: Kimkinth is a surly and ill-tempered beast. He loves to poke and prod at people's and dragon's vices with his usually sharp and caustic wit. But since Kimkinth is just full of hot air, his threats are more often than not baseless. Not your usual Blue Kimkinth prefers to plunge into a problem, or create one himself, with reckless abandonment and leave the rational thinking part to his oftentimes exasperated Mine. This obnoxious quality of the Blue really gets on V'sos's nerves, especially since he knows that Kimkinth is actually intelligent and should know better.
